Futurist • Technologist • Naturalist

I refer to myself as a results-oriented leader and entrepreneur who assembles Smartups for the Social Web. I live and work at the intersection of the Semantic Web, Synaptic Web, nanotechnology, synthetic biology, ecology, and the Singularity.

I am also a naturalist and avid birder, currently co-authoring the next regional Kaufman Field Guide. For more on that, please see these two articles:

Open All The Way

I frequently write about the Open Web, Social Web, and Open Source of all types (software, hardware, science, data, Web standards). I've served as an invited expert to the W3C’s WebID Incubator Group and the W3C’s Federated Social Web Incubator Group. I am also a charter member of the W3C’s Web Payments Standards Community Group.

Startups and Smartups

My most recent smartup, still in private alpha, is a collaborative community for people who create books. I am also in the early stages of a new startup in the longevity, future tech, and Singularity space: ThirdSpan.

About My Tagline

The vast majority of my social media followers, and the readers of my blog, know me as technological futurist and as an InterWeb technologist. But I am as much a naturalist and ecologist as I am a futurist and technologist.

To me, the study of the natural world, the drive to understand the intimate connections of the Web of Life and the complex adaptive systems that power our ecosphere, provide me with unique insights into the technological challenges our species face. Being a naturalist makes me a better technologist and futurist; and being a futurist allows me to better assess the threats to our ecosphere and the opportunities that disruptive innovation may offer in helping to address some of these threats.

I have a passion for nature. I share this deep passion for the natural world with my wife. It is a driving force in our lives. I am also fortunate to have the opportunity to research and write natural-history field guides. It is an honor to work with and be associated with one of the world’s foremost naturalists, Kenn Kaufman.

My work in natural history -- writing field guides and studying nature -- does not significantly contribute to the financial stability in my life. It is more of an avocation than a vocation. But it is an integral part of who I am. I continue to work within this field to stay grounded.

To understand me, you need to appreciate the intricate connections between the Web of Life and humanity’s future. We are part of the natural world. As technological advancements continue accelerating at an accelerating rate, our species will not only survive, but also thrive by studying and protecting the Earth’s ecosystems -- and ecosystems elsewhere in the universe.

These are my top 60 (hash)tags under which I do most of my posting. If Google Plus enabled Content Channels, then users could subscribe to what they considered my signal and filter out what they considered my noise. Instead, we must intermingle our interest graph with the rest of the G+ world.

I present these in alpha order for easier perusal. This will give you a pretty clear picture of the myriad topics I cover. It should be evident that the bulk of my postings revolve around humanity's accelerating future, scientific advancement, and entrepreneurship.
